Carter House
Art and Anna Carter settled at the mouth of the Montagneuse River in 1917, where they raised cattle, ran freight on the Peace River, and operated a sawmill serving local homesteaders. After losing cattle to poisonous weeds and frequent bear trouble, they relocated to Hillandale, building this house in 1938. Considered grand for the Depression era—especially for a couple without children—it reflects their success. Art also worked as a Land Locator, helping settlers find homestead sites.
